2021 Destination Korean Sool Breweries: Travel Korea to Please Your Eyes and Taste Buds
We’d like to present four new ‘destination breweries’ selected in 2021 to you.
First things first, what is a destination brewery?
In short, a destination brewery in Korea is a selected hot spot. Visit anywhere with the designation, and you can try a fresh brew of traditional Korean liquors and travel to tourist attractions nearby.
The Project Destination Brewery was launched in 2013 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs (MARFA) and Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corporation (aT). It supports qualified breweries to improve facilities, develop experience programs, and promote their brand. The project also allows consumers to drink and experience freshly brewed Korean sool where it is made.
There are 46 destination breweries officially designated in Korea.
In 2021, local governments across the country recommended 19 candidates, and four were selected based on five criteria: 1) certified liquor quality 2) brewery history 3) connection with the local community 4) tourist attractions nearby 5) awards won in competitions
Mowall
Mowall makes characteristically dry liquors. Near the brewery, there is a short trekking course called Wonju Gubigil Trail. Also, a short trip to Wonju Herb Farm and Chiaksan Mountain will make you feel relaxed and healed in a Korean way.
Soolawon
Soolawon is a brewer of gwahaju, the Korean rice wine for summer. It is sweet, but the alcohol content is close to 20 degrees, giving you an unexpected twist. Located in Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do, the brewery has great access to Korea’s central region, including metropolitan areas, Gangwon-do, and Chungcheong-do.
Janghee
Janghee’s Sejongdaewang Uhju Yakju won the presidential award in the 2019 Korean Sool Competition. Cool-aged, this yakju has a distinctive sweet and bitter aroma. The brewery offers various experience programs, including makgeolli bread making and rice wine lees cookie baking.
Hamiang
Hamiang is a winery that uses sanmeoru wild grapes. There are various programs, including a winery tour, wine foot-bathing, and sanmeoru soap making
