In Korea, the day of the first full moon in the lunar new year is called Jeongwol Daeboreum, or the Great Full Moon Festival. On this day, Koreans drink a shot of clear liquor at room temperature, called gwibalgisul or ‘ear-sharpening liquor.’ The name suggests that the alcohol will sharpen your ears for good news for the year.

Here are some ear-sharpening Cheongju and yakju to drink on Jeongwol Daeboreum.

Yangchon Chungju (ABV 14%)

Yangchon Chungju is a rice wine that shows off the true taste and aroma of cheongju. It goes down the throat smoothly, leaving faintly sweet notes on your tongue. “May your ears and eyes be sharpened.” Drink it with these well-wishing remarks, and you will fully enjoy Jeongwol Daeboreum

Hata (ABV 16%)

Hata is cheongju with attractive umami from rice nuruk. It goes down the throat smoothly and pairs superbly with Korean cuisine, including acorn jelly salad and various pan-fried delicacies.

Cheonnyeondamju (ABV 15%)

Cheonnyeondamju is yakju made with rice and honey. Take a sip of the clear, transparent golden drink, and you will experience the clean umami from the ingredients.

Baengnyeon Malgeunsul (ABV 12%)

Baengnyeon Malgeunsul is yakju with an outstanding clean and smooth taste. Its balanced acidity will refresh your mouth, and it is perfect for drinking as gwibalgisul.

Cheongseju (ABV 18%)

Cheongseju has a note of sour green apples. Despite the faint sour, what dominates the attractive yakju is sweetness. It works well as aperitif, as the light bitterness stimulates your appetite.

That’s all for our selection of gwibalgisul to celebrate the Great Full Moon Festival.
